Why New Nintendo Filings Are Getting GameCube Fans Excited for Switch 2

By GabrielMar 18,2025

Recent Nintendo filings have ignited excitement among fans, hinting at a potential new GameCube controller for playing classic GameCube titles on the Nintendo Switch Online service, possibly even on the upcoming Switch 2. As reported by Nintendo Life, a new FCC filing for a "game controller" aligns with the Switch 2's specifications, suggesting a wireless Bluetooth controller.

Further investigation by Famiboards revealed that an image within the filing shows a label placement matching the back of a GameCube controller, specifically behind the C-Stick.

Although it could be a new Switch 2 Pro Controller, current speculation points towards its integration with Nintendo's Switch Online subscription, which already utilizes wireless classic controllers for retro gaming. This naturally leads to anticipation for a GameCube game library on Nintendo Switch Online. While fans have long requested GameCube classics on the Switch, Nintendo has primarily focused on NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy titles. Could the Switch 2 finally bring a significant return of GameCube games?

Nintendo Consoles

The Switch 2 was unveiled earlier in January with a brief trailer confirming backwards compatibility and the addition of a second USB-C port. Many details, including its game lineup and the function of a mysterious new Joy-Con button, remain undisclosed, although the Joy-Con mouse theory gained some traction.

A recent Nintendo patent suggested the Switch 2's Joy-Cons could be attached upside down, utilizing gyro mechanics similar to smartphones without screen lock. Unlike the original Switch's rail system, the new controllers appear to use magnets for attachment on either side.

This design change offers flexibility in button placement and port positioning, and could potentially unlock interesting new gameplay mechanics.

Analysts predict a $400-$500 price point for the Switch 2, with a potential June release. While much remains unknown, Nintendo plans a Direct presentation for April 2nd to reveal more details. Until then, Metroid Prime Remastered offers a satisfying taste of GameCube gaming on the current Nintendo Switch.
