PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But Not a Home Run
A hypothetical poll asking which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next would likely crown NFL 2K the overwhelming winner. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of gameplay, it's a promising offering.
HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for a decade, starting with The Golf Club. This experience clearly shows in 2K25. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an exhaustive list of real-world courses (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the core gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, like occasional framerate hiccups on PC, didn't detract significantly from the overall experience.
The improved EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Controller users will appreciate the right stick control, allowing for nuanced shot shaping. Difficulty settings cater to both casual and hardcore players, with options ranging from forgiving "Perfect Swing" to a more challenging, realistic experience. Lateral movement in the tee box adds a strategic layer. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, further enhanced the enjoyment.
MyCareer mode receives a welcome boost with narrative elements, offering branching choices that influence stat boosts. Earning VC unlocks gear that affects stats, and weekly Quests provide ongoing goals. The MyPlayer creator allows for reasonable character customization, and the inclusion of skill trees is a significant upgrade. While multiplayer wasn't tested, the promise of ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies suggests engaging social gameplay, reminiscent of classic titles like Links 2004. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players with differing time zones.
PGA Tour 2K25 excels in its balanced approach, delivering solid gameplay across the board without exceptional highs or lows. This makes it less sensational, but ultimately reliable. A playable demo is currently available, allowing players to experience the game firsthand before committing to a purchase. Golf enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxing gaming experience should find it a worthwhile addition to their library.
