Atlus' *Persona* series, catapulted to iconic JRPG status by *Persona 5 Royal*, boasts a surprisingly rich history. While *Persona 5*'s popularity is undeniable—even inspiring tourism to Shibuya Station—the franchise's success was a gradual climb. A *Shin Megami Tensei* spin-off, the first *Persona* game debuted nearly three decades ago, and despite the game titles, there are actually six mainline entries, not five, excluding spin-offs, remakes, and enhanced versions (*Metaphor: ReFantazio* not included).
Exploring this 30-year JRPG legacy is worthwhile, though accessibility varies. Here's where you can legally play all mainline *Persona* games. A PSP might be a worthwhile investment.
Revelations: Persona
| Platforms | PS1, PlayStation Classic, PSP |
Released in 1996 for the original PlayStation, with later releases on Windows and PSP, Revelations: Persona sees our heroes gaining Personas after a fateful fortune-telling encounter. Unfortunately, its most recent "re-release" was on the PlayStation Classic. No modern hardware versions currently exist; you'll need a physical copy for PS1, PlayStation Classic, or PSP. However, Atlus' commitment to remaking older titles suggests a remastered version may be on the horizon.
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 — Innocent Sin
| Platforms | PlayStation, PSP, PlayStation Vita |
Initially released in Japan in 1999, Persona 2: Innocent Sin arrived in North America and Europe on PSP in 2011, also appearing on PlayStation Vita. Currently, no modern console versions are available, mirroring Revelations: Persona's situation. The story follows Sumaru high schoolers battling the reality-bending villain, Joker.
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
| Platforms | PlayStation, PSP, PlayStation Vita, PS3 |
A direct sequel to Innocent Sin, Eternal Punishment (released in 2000) features a different protagonist, a teen reporter, continuing the "Joker Curse" storyline. Unlike Innocent Sin, it received a simultaneous North American PlayStation release in 2000 and a PSP remake in 2011, also available on the PlayStation Network for PS3 owners in 2013. No modern hardware versions exist, but a dual remake of Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment seems plausible.
Persona 3
| Platforms (Persona 3) | PlayStation 2 |
| Platforms (Persona 3 FES) | PlayStation 3 |

Marking the series' full emergence from Shin Megami Tensei's shadow, Persona 3 (released on PlayStation 2 in 2006/2007) centers on teens investigating the "Dark Hour" time anomaly. Persona 3 FES, with an epilogue, followed on PS3. Persona 3 Portable, a more accessible version, arrived on PSP and later on PS4, Windows, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The latest iteration, Persona 3 Reload (2024), is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
Persona 4
| Platforms (Persona 4) | PlayStation 2 |
| Platforms (Persona 4 Golden) | PlayStation Vita, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox X/S, Nintendo Switch, PC |
Released in 2008 for PlayStation 2, Persona 4's murder mystery captivated players. The enhanced Persona 4 Golden (2012, PlayStation Vita) is now available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
Persona 5
| Platforms (Persona 5) | PS3, PS4 |
| Platforms (Persona 5 Royal) | PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC |
Persona 5, released on PS3 and PS4 in 2016/2017, propelled the series to mainstream fame. The definitive Persona 5 Royal (released in North America in March 2020), is available on PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The game follows Joker, who gets entangled in the world of "palaces" created by people's delusions.
