Sony addressed the nearly day-long PlayStation Network (PSN) outage this past weekend, attributing it to an unspecified "operational issue" in a social media statement. The company offered no further explanation of the problem's root cause or preventative measures.
To compensate PlayStation Plus subscribers for the disruption, Sony will automatically add five extra days to their subscriptions.
Gamers experienced widespread issues, with over one-third unable to log in and others reporting server crashes.
The outage highlights ongoing player concerns regarding Sony's requirement of a PSN account, even for single-player games on PC. This policy remains a point of contention among users.
This isn't the first major PSN downtime. A significant data breach in April 2011 resulted in over 20 days of connectivity problems. While this recent incident was less severe, the lack of detailed information from Sony has left PS5 users feeling frustrated.
