Sony's Policy Shift: PSN Accounts No Longer Mandatory for Some PC Game Ports

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a significant change to its PC port strategy, making PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts optional for several PS5 titles released on PC. This move follows considerable player feedback and addresses previous controversies surrounding mandatory PSN account linking.
Freedom to Play: Select Titles Now PSN-Free

Effective after the January 30, 2025 launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC, players will no longer need a PSN account to access several titles. This includes Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and the upcoming April 2025 release of The Last of Us Part II Remastered. However, it's important to note that titles like Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut and Until Dawn will still require PSN account linking.
Incentives for PSN Users Remain

While PSN accounts are no longer mandatory, Sony is incentivizing players to log in. Benefits include trophy support, friend management, and exclusive in-game content:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Early unlock of the Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and the Miles Morales 2099 Suit.
- God of War Ragnarök: Access to the Armor of the Black Bear set and a resource bundle (500 Hacksilver and 250 XP).
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: 50 bonus points, and Ellie's Jordan's Jacket skin.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: Access to the Nora Valiant outfit.
Sony indicates further incentives may be added in the future.
Addressing Past Backlash

The shift in policy directly addresses the negative reception to mandatory PSN account linking in previous PC ports, notably Helldivers 2 and God of War Ragnarök. The limited geographical availability of PSN (approximately 70 countries) presented significant barriers for players in unsupported regions. This forced many to create accounts in supported regions, raising concerns about data privacy and security. This change reflects Sony's commitment to improving its approach to PC gaming.
