Robert Eggers, the visionary director behind the chilling gothic horror Nosferatu, is set to helm a sequel to the beloved fantasy classic, Labyrinth.
According to Variety, Eggers will pen the script and direct this highly anticipated follow-up to Jim Henson's 1986 masterpiece, starring the iconic David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. He'll collaborate on the screenplay with Sjón, his writing partner on The Northman. While a sequel was previously in development with Scott Derrickson attached, TriStar and Jim Henson Pictures have opted for Eggers' unique vision.
The original Labyrinth, released in 1986, featured Bowie as the captivating Goblin King Jareth, who abducts Connelly's baby brother. Connelly's character embarks on a perilous journey through a fantastical realm, aided by a memorable cast of Henson puppets, to rescue her sibling.
Eggers' creative endeavors extend beyond Labyrinth. He's also slated to direct Werwulf, a werewolf film targeting a Christmas 2026 release. Details are scarce, but the film is set in 13th-century England, utilizing authentic Old English dialogue.
Nosferatu, Eggers' recent Christmas release, is a reimagining of F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film. Set in 19th-century Germany, the film follows a real estate agent whose dealings with a Transylvanian count unleash terrifying vampiric consequences upon him and his wife.
Nosferatu garnered four Oscar nominations, including Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. Read our review here.
