Scarlett Johansson, a veteran of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has firmly stated that her character, Black Widow, is "dead" and she appears uninterested in reprising the role in the near future. During an interview with InStyle, Johansson discussed the future of the Avenger in the MCU. As she prepares to leave her mark on another major franchise with this summer's Jurassic World Rebirth, fans have speculated on what it might take to see her return as Natasha Romanoff. Despite Black Widow's significant impact on Johansson's career, the actress seems to have little interest in revisiting the character anytime soon.
Johansson was emphatic about Black Widow's fate, stating, "Natasha is dead. She is dead. *She's dead.* Okay?" She emphasized the need for fans to accept the character's demise, saying, "We’re going to *have* to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment." Although Johansson last portrayed Black Widow in the 2021 standalone film, the character met her in-universe end in 2019's Avengers: Endgame, sacrificing herself to save Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye. Despite the clear finality of her death, fans continue to theorize about possible ways for her to return.
Johansson acknowledged the fans' reluctance to accept Black Widow's death, noting, "They just don't want to believe it. They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’ Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We’re going to *have* to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment."
The MCU has a history of bringing back deceased characters, and upcoming event movies like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are anticipated to be major crossover events. These films are not only the next chapter for the MCU but also rumored to feature numerous cameos. Robert Downey Jr. is set to transition from Iron Man to play Doctor Doom, the first in over a decade, while rumors about other familiar faces returning have circulated. The Wrap reported in December that Chris Evans might return as Captain America, a claim he later denied, yet it has fueled speculation among fans.
Additionally, Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter, who has died twice in MCU movies, is rumored to appear in the upcoming Doomsday project. With so many characters potentially returning, it's understandable that fans continue to speculate about Black Widow's possible inclusion, despite Johansson's clear stance. Fans will have to wait until May 1, 2026, for Avengers: Doomsday, and May 7, 2027, for Avengers: Secret Wars to see which characters, living or dead, will make an appearance.
