Largest Roster From The Series Ever
In a thrilling announcement, Sega and Sonic Team are set to release Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, potentially boasting the largest character roster in the Sonic The Hedgehog racing series. Thalia Piedra, Sega of America Associate PR Manager, detailed the game's new mechanics and features in a PlayStation.blog post dated February 12, 2025.
The game will feature an exciting mix of "iconic characters from the Sonic and Sega universes," although the reveal trailer only showcased characters from the Sonic franchise. At launch, players can expect 23 characters, with more to be added post-release. The trailer confirmed the inclusion of Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Amy, alongside Sonic Riders' Jet, Wave, and Storm, and the Deadly Six's Zavok and Zazz. Team Dark members Shadow, Rouge, and E-123 Omega join Dr. Eggman and his creations Egg Pawn and Metal Sonic. The Chaotix team, including Vector, Charmy, and Espio, will also race, rounded out by Blaze, Silver, Cream, and Big.
Travel Rings Will Transport Characters To Different CrossWorlds
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds introduces a revolutionary gameplay mechanic with Travel Rings, allowing racers to transition between different worlds in real-time during races. As detailed by Thalia Piedra, these rings will "bring dramatic changes to races, transporting players from one world to a completely new location." Each CrossWorld offers a theme park-like experience filled with surprises such as "large monsters, engaging obstacles, and tracks filled with beautiful scenery."
The game will feature dynamic tracks inspired by previous titles like Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, with each lap bringing new changes that racers must adapt to. Players can expect 24 main tracks and 15 CrossWorlds to explore.
Customization, Extreme Gear, Gadgets, and More!
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds promises the most extensive vehicle customization seen in the series to date. A Twitter (X) post from the game's official account on February 17, 2025, showcased various customization options, including the ability to modify the front and rear parts of the vehicle, wheels, and deep color customization for the body, tires, cockpit, and overall glow.
Additionally, players can equip their characters with Gadgets, customizable to enhance their play style, with 23 different power-up items available. The game will feature 45 unique original vehicles, including the return of Extreme Gear from Sonic Riders, offering a boost-based racing experience.
Takashi Iizuka, Sonic Creative Officer, emphasized that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds represents "a great culmination of all the Sonic Racing series games to date."
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Closed Network Test Announced
Closed Network Test Registration Now Open
A closed network test for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is scheduled to give fans an early look at the game. Registration opened on February 12, 2025, and will close on February 19, 2025. The test will run from February 21, 2025, to February 24, 2025, exclusively on PlayStation 5.
