Sony Says You Won't Have to Link a PSN Account to Play Some of Its PC Games Anymore

Sony's revised PC gaming strategy: No more mandatory PSN accounts, but incentives remain.

Sony has announced a significant shift in its PC gaming strategy, eliminating the requirement to link a PlayStation Network (PSN) account for several PC titles. This change, effective with the PC release of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, addresses player concerns regarding the previous mandatory PSN account linking. Games affected include Marvel's Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, God of War Ragnarök, and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. The impact on other single-player PC ports remains unclear.

While removing the mandatory PSN link, Sony still aims to encourage PC players to join its ecosystem. Connecting a PSN account will now unlock exclusive in-game bonuses, such as early suit unlocks in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and resource bundles for God of War Ragnarök. These incentives, detailed below, are designed to sweeten the deal for those who choose to connect.

PlayStation PC In-Game Content Incentives:

  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and the Miles Morales 2099 Suit.
  • God of War Ragnarök: The Armor of the Black Bear set (previously only available in New Game+) and a resource bundle (500 Hacksilver and 250 XP).
  • The Last of Us Part II Remastered: 50 bonus points to activate features and unlock extras, including Ellie's Jordan's Jacket skin.
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: Access to the Nora Valiant outfit.

Sony plans to continue collaborating with PlayStation Studios developers to offer further PSN account benefits. The company also highlights the advantages of linking an account, such as trophy support and friend management.

This policy change follows mixed reception to Sony's previous PSN requirement on PC, which faced criticism, particularly in regions lacking PSN access. A similar controversy arose with Helldivers 2 last year, where a mandatory PSN link was quickly reversed following player backlash.
