Sony Cutting PS4 Games from PlayStation Plus Next Year

By EmilyFeb 21,2025

Sony is phasing out PlayStation 4 (PS4) games from its PlayStation Plus Essentials and Games Catalog starting January 2026, focusing its efforts on PlayStation 5 (PS5) titles.

This shift, announced alongside February 2025's PlayStation Plus monthly games, means PS4 games will become less frequent additions to the monthly and catalog offerings. Sony clarified that this change won't affect previously acquired games, and existing Games Catalog titles will remain accessible until their scheduled removal.

The company emphasized its commitment to evolving PlayStation Plus, highlighting continued benefits like exclusive discounts, online multiplayer, and cloud saves. Sony's rationale cites a growing PS5 player base and a corresponding increase in PS5 game redemption and access.

With the PS4's launch in 2013 and the PS5's arrival in 2020, Sony's decision reflects the console's lifecycle and the player base's transition to the newer generation. The future placement of PS4 games within the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog (currently housing PlayStation, PS2, and PS3 titles) remains unconfirmed, with further details expected closer to the implementation date.
