Set to launch on September 26, Marvel’s Spider-Man will be the second fully draftable, Standard-legal set in Magic’s Universes Beyond line, following Final Fantasy, and the third overall after 2023's Modern-legal Lord of the Rings set. Unlike what you might expect, this set won’t include preconstructed Commander decks. Instead, the cards in the Scene Box shown above won’t be Standard-legal; they are specifically crafted for Commander play.

While a Secret Lair featuring Wolverine, Captain America, and others marked Magic's first foray into the Marvel universe last year, Spider-Man will be the first full set inspired by the comics. According to Wizards of the Coast Executive Producer Max McCall, a full set was necessary to do justice to the character and include the vast array of villains he's encountered over the years.

"Spider-Man needs a full set to do justice to the character, and incorporate the many villains he’s come across over the years," McCall explains. "Choosing characters from the Spider-Man canon for a broader set would leave too many characters out. We could fit Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales in a non-Spider-Man specific set, but there wouldn’t be room for Aunt May."

McCall highlights that designing for a Universes Beyond set "flips the worldbuilding on its head." Unlike typical Magic sets, where cards need to establish a setting and be engaging, Universes Beyond can leverage existing fan familiarity with characters like Spider-Man. "When we create a card that reflects the theme of great power and great responsibility, we can incorporate more mechanical complexity because fans already understand the narrative the card represents. We don’t need to keep Universes Beyond cards 'simple'—we just need to select iconic moments that resonate with fans."

Magic's Head Designer Mark Rosewater discusses translating Spider-Man's world into the game, emphasizing that the color pie "is robust enough that we can showcase heroism and villainy in all five colors." For example, Rosewater notes that Spider-Man would fit into white, blue, and green colors, with the specific version in the Scene Box being white and blue.

"Spider-Man’s obligation to use his power to help others aligns with the white color pie. His origin from a scientific accident and his inventive nature, such as his web-slingers, resonate with blue. Additionally, his powers stemming from an animal and his connection to the Spider-Man universe embody green."

"We're not limiting ourselves to any one [comic] run or series."

Alongside the Scene Box, the set will feature Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, and Prerelease Packs, all showcased in the gallery above. While preconstructed Commander decks won't be included, the set will bring back Welcome Decks—introductory decks often distributed for free by game stores to help new players learn the game.

In addition to this year’s Final Fantasy set, Wizards of the Coast has also announced a set themed around Avatar: The Last Airbender. Prior to that, two more in-universe sets will be released: Tarkir: Dragontsorm and the space-themed Edge of Eternities.
