"Switch 2 GameCube Controller Compatibility Limited to GameCube Classics, Nintendo Confirms"

By BellaApr 15,2025

Nintendo enthusiasts have a lot to look forward to with the upcoming launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, which will also introduce the beloved Nintendo GameCube to the Nintendo Switch Online service. Alongside this exciting announcement, a new classic GameCube controller designed for the Switch 2 is on its way. However, a small detail in the UK version of the Switch 2 GameCube controller trailer has caught the attention of fans. It states, "The controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics," suggesting that the new controller might be limited to GameCube games on the Switch 2 Online Expansion Pack and not other Switch 2 games.

As noted by VGC, it's important to remember that similar restrictions on other Nintendo controllers have not always been strictly enforced, allowing players to use retro controllers in various contexts. Interestingly, this disclaimer does not appear in the Nintendo of America version of the trailer. Despite the potential limitation, the GameCube controller's layout, with its ample buttons, could still be useful for many Switch 2 games, potentially setting expectations or preventing frustration for users trying to use it as a substitute for other input devices.

For those who already own the GameCube Controller adapter from the Wii U era, there's good news: it will be compatible with the Switch 2 dock via USB, ensuring continued use of this accessory with the new console.

The classic GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch alongside the new console, though the specific pre-order date remains under wraps. The rollout of pre-orders has been complicated by U.S. tariffs, adding uncertainty to the process.

This major update to the Nintendo Switch Online library will provide subscribers with access to a range of iconic games from the early 2000s. Titles such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2 will be available right at launch this summer. The library is expected to grow over time, with additional titles like Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness teased for future releases.
