A February 6, 2025, publication from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) details a Nintendo patent for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons, revealing intriguing functionalities, most notably mouse-like capabilities. This patent seemingly confirms speculation sparked by the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which briefly showed a controller being moved across a surface, suggesting this innovative control scheme. While Nintendo remains tight-lipped, the patent offers a strong indication of what's to come.

Enhanced Joy-Cons and New Controllers

The Switch 2 Joy-Cons appear similar to their predecessors, remaining detachable from the console. However, the patent highlights their new mouse functionality. The document describes a sensor that "detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface."

A new charging dock capable of charging up to two Joy-Cons simultaneously is also mentioned. A magnetic attachment, complete with a wrist strap, connects the Joy-Cons to the console.

Furthermore, the patent introduces a novel controller design—essentially two half-controllers, each equipped with an optical sensor for mouse functionality. These can also be combined using a separate attachment to form a standard controller.

It’s important to note that the patent's details might not fully represent the final Switch 2 product. Nintendo hasn't officially confirmed these features.
