In my latest exploration of retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, I've decided to take a unique approach. You might be surprised to learn that there aren't as many individual Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS ports on the Switch as you'd find on other platforms. So, I've decided to combine them into a single list, much like how these consoles shared space on store shelves back in the day. While the Nintendo Switch Online app offers a wealth of Game Boy Advance titles, our focus today is on the standout games available directly through the Switch eShop. Here are ten of our favorites, with four from the Game Boy Advance and six from the Nintendo DS, presented in no particular order. Let's dive in!
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Let's kick things off with Steel Empire, a solid shoot 'em up that, while not as revered as its Genesis/Mega Drive counterpart, still holds its own. It's a great title to compare with the original and offers a more streamlined experience. Steel Empire is engaging regardless of your platform of choice, appealing even to those who typically shy away from shooters.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

As the Mega Man X series began to wane on home consoles, Mega Man Zero emerged as the true heir to the Mega Man legacy on the Game Boy Advance. This game marks the beginning of a remarkable series of side-scrolling action titles. While it may have some initial roughness, it's a fantastic starting point that only gets better with each sequel.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

I'm featuring another Mega Man title because Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer distinct experiences. Mega Man Battle Network is an RPG with a unique battle system that blends strategy with action. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is brilliantly executed, making for a compelling experience despite the series' later decline.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

Within the Castlevania Advance Collection, Aria of Sorrow stands out as a gem. It's a game I sometimes prefer over the iconic Symphony of the Night. The soul-collecting mechanic adds a fun element of grinding, and the gameplay is so engaging that it's hard to put down. With its unique setting and hidden secrets, it's a top pick among third-party Game Boy Advance titles.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

Originally a cult hit, Shantae gained broader recognition with the DSiWare release of Shantae: Risky’s Revenge. This game marked the beginning of Shantae's continuous presence across console generations. Interestingly, it evolved from an unreleased Game Boy Advance project, which is soon to be released and might join this list in the future.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Although it started on the Game Boy Advance, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney truly shines on the Nintendo DS. This series blends investigation with dramatic courtroom scenes, delivering both humor and compelling narratives. The first game sets a high standard, though personal favorites may vary among the sequels.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick offers a unique twist on storytelling and gameplay. As a ghost, you solve puzzles to save lives and uncover the mystery of your own death. This underappreciated gem from its DS days deserves more recognition, and Capcom's continued support is commendable.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

The World Ends With You is a masterpiece on the Nintendo DS, perfectly utilizing the system's capabilities. While subsequent ports haven't quite captured the original's magic, the Switch version is still a solid option. It's a must-play for its innovative gameplay and rich narrative.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection brings together all the Nintendo DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow stands out, especially with its improved control scheme on the Switch. All three titles in this collection are worth exploring for their unique contributions to the series.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

Etrian Odyssey III is the largest and most ambitious of the trilogy, though it can feel a bit overwhelming. Atlus has done an admirable job adapting this DS/3DS-centric series for the Switch, making it a worthwhile experience for RPG fans.
And there you have it, folks! What are your favorite Game Boy Advance or Nintendo DS games on the Switch? Share your thoughts in the comments below—I'm eager to hear your opinions! As always, thank you for reading.
