TouchArcade Game of the Week: ‘Ocean Keeper’

TouchArcade Rating: A masterful blend of distinct gameplay styles is what makes Ocean Keeper shine. It seamlessly integrates side-scrolling mining with top-down mech combat, creating a compelling and replayable experience reminiscent of titles like Blaster Master and Dave the Diver.

In Ocean Keeper, you pilot a mech on a mysterious underwater planet, venturing into caves to mine resources before facing waves of enemies. The side-view mining segments involve excavating rocks for resources and artifacts, earning in-game currency along the way. This mining phase is time-limited, forcing strategic resource gathering before the top-down twin-stick shooter combat begins. Defend your mech against increasingly challenging waves of underwater creatures, utilizing light tower defense strategies.

Resources fuel upgrades for both your mining equipment and your mech, branching skill trees offering diverse customization options. The roguelike element means death resets your run's progress, but persistent upgrades ensure continuous advancement between attempts. Procedurally generated overworld and cave layouts guarantee fresh challenges each playthrough.

While initially slow-paced, and early runs may prove challenging, Ocean Keeper rewards persistence. As upgrades accumulate and skills improve, the game's addictive loop takes hold. Experimenting with weapon and upgrade synergies is key to mastering the game's strategic depth. Despite a slow start, the satisfying gameplay loop and strategic depth make Ocean Keeper a highly engaging and rewarding experience.
