Bethesda Game Studios has shed light on why Virtuos' newly released The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is labeled a remaster and not a remake. In a detailed post on X/Twitter, the studio behind the beloved fantasy RPG series outlined its definition of a remaster and the reasoning behind their choice. As Bethesda expressed gratitude to both newcomers and returning players, they emphasized their intention was never to create a remake.
"We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today's technology," Bethesda explained. This clarification comes as fans officially experience Oblivion Remastered for the first time, with the game now available and showcasing significant visual upgrades along with some key gameplay enhancements. Notable updates include the addition of sprinting and a revamped level-up system, blending elements from the original Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.
Despite the extensive modifications—from redesigned sewer grates to game-altering features—many players feel that Oblivion Remastered resembles a remake more than a mere graphical update. While the past decade has seen many remasters focusing primarily on visual enhancements, Bethesda remains firm in categorizing their 2021-started project as a remaster.
"We looked at every part and carefully upgraded it," Bethesda continued. "But most of all, we never wanted to change the core. It's still a game from a previous era and should feel like one."
Bethesda expressed excitement for both veteran fans revisiting the land of Cyrodiil and new players experiencing Oblivion for the first time. "We can't thank you enough for all the support you have given us and our games over the years. Our hope with this remaster is, that no matter who you are, when you step out of the Imperial sewer – you feel like you're experiencing it for the first time."
