NetEase's Strategic Shift Impacts North American Studios
Marvel Rivals Director and US Team Laid Off

Thaddeus Sasser, director of Marvel Rivals, announced on LinkedIn on February 19, 2025, that he and other California-based developers were laid off by NetEase Games. This news came as a surprise, given the game's recent success. Sasser highlighted the team's contributions to launching a highly successful new franchise.
Undeterred, Sasser took to LinkedIn to actively promote his former team members to potential employers, showcasing their skills and experience. He specifically highlighted Garry McGee, the game's technical designer, praising his abilities and offering a strong recommendation.
NetEase's Controversial North American Strategy

Marvel Rivals was developed collaboratively by teams in China and Seattle. While Sasser's team played a crucial role in game and level design, their contributions didn't prevent them from being affected by the layoffs. While NetEase hasn't publicly commented on the situation, industry rumors suggest a broader strategic withdrawal from North America. This is supported by previous events, including the termination of funding for Worlds Untold and the dissolution of the partnership with Jar of Sparks.

These changes were announced on the game's YouTube channel on February 19, 2025.
Lead combat designer Zhiyong detailed upcoming balance changes, including adjustments to energy costs for characters with rapid ultimate recharge and modifications to Vanguard character survivability and movement. Several overpowered heroes are also receiving nerfs. One planned feature, a rank reset, was subsequently removed following negative player feedback.
