EA Announces Next Battlefield Game Set for Fiscal Year 2026

Electronic Arts (EA) has announced that the next installment in the iconic Battlefield series is slated for release during the company's fiscal year 2026, which spans from April 2025 to March 2026. This exciting news came as part of EA's financial results report for the third quarter of its fiscal year ending March 2025. Alongside the release timeline, EA provided a first look at pre-alpha gameplay footage and introduced Battlefield Labs, a new initiative designed to harness player feedback to enhance the game's development.

The upcoming Battlefield game is a collaborative effort under the newly formed Battlefield Studios, which brings together four renowned studios: DICE in Stockholm, Sweden, focused on crafting the multiplayer experience; Motive, known for the Dead Space remake and Star Wars: Squadrons, contributing to single-player missions and multiplayer maps; Ripple Effect in the U.S., tasked with attracting new players to the franchise; and Criterion in the UK, previously involved with Need for Speed, now working on the single-player campaign. This multi-studio approach underscores EA's commitment to delivering a top-tier gaming experience.

EA emphasized that the development teams are entering a critical phase, and through Battlefield Labs, they aim to gather essential player insights on core elements such as combat, destruction, weapons, vehicles, gadgets, maps, modes, and squad play. The initiative will also test beloved modes like Conquest and Breakthrough, while exploring new concepts and refining the class system to deepen strategic gameplay.

The decision to return to a modern setting, reminiscent of the acclaimed Battlefield 3 and 4, marks a strategic shift after the mixed reception of Battlefield 2042. This move back to a more familiar and beloved era aims to reconnect with core fans while expanding the franchise's appeal. The new game will focus on 64-player maps and will not feature the controversial Specialists from its predecessor, instead opting for traditional class roles.

Despite the excitement, it's important to acknowledge the closure of Ridgeline Games last year, which was developing a standalone single-player Battlefield title. This closure and subsequent layoffs highlight the challenges within the industry, even as EA ramps up its investment in the Battlefield series.

With concept art hinting at ship-to-ship and helicopter combat, as well as natural disasters like wildfires, the next Battlefield game promises to deliver thrilling and immersive experiences. EA CEO Andrew Wilson has described it as one of the most ambitious projects in the company's history, and Vince Zampella, Head of Respawn & Group GM for EA Studios Organization, has emphasized the goal of expanding the Battlefield universe while regaining the trust of its dedicated fanbase.

As anticipation builds, details on launch platforms and the final title remain under wraps. However, the concerted efforts of Battlefield Studios and the innovative approach of Battlefield Labs suggest that EA is all in on delivering a Battlefield experience that resonates with both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
