EA Announces Apex Legends 2.0 to Revitalize the Franchise
As Apex Legends approaches its sixth anniversary, Electronic Arts (EA) has acknowledged the game's underperformance in terms of revenue, despite maintaining a substantial player base. In a recent earnings call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson confirmed that while Apex Legends boasts over 200 million players, its current trajectory isn't meeting the company's financial targets.
Wilson highlighted the ongoing efforts to support the existing community through quality-of-life improvements, anti-cheat measures, and new content releases. While acknowledging some progress, he admitted that the results haven't been as significant as hoped.
To address this, EA is developing a major overhaul, dubbed "Apex Legends 2.0," aimed at reinvigorating the franchise, attracting new players, and boosting revenue. However, the launch is strategically planned for after the release of the next Battlefield title, anticipated before April 2026, suggesting a rollout sometime during EA's 2027 fiscal year.
Wilson emphasized the company's long-term commitment to Apex Legends, envisioning it as a franchise capable of sustained growth over decades. Apex Legends 2.0 is not intended as the final iteration of the game but rather a significant update to enhance the overall player experience.
The planned revitalization bears resemblance to Activision's approach with Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0. While the success of that reboot remains debatable, EA will undoubtedly learn from the experiences of its competitors in the battle royale market.
Despite its current trajectory, Apex Legends remains a top-performing game on Steam in terms of concurrent players. However, its player count has significantly declined from its peak, prompting EA's strategic intervention with Apex Legends 2.0. The future success of this ambitious update will be crucial in determining the long-term viability of the franchise.
