The game director of MultiVersus, Tony Huynh, has publicly addressed the "threats to harm" developers following the announcement of the game's impending shutdown. Last week, Player First Games revealed that Season 5 would mark the end of the Warner Bros. brawler, with servers shutting down in May, just a year after its relaunch. Players can still access all earned and purchased content offline via local gameplay and training modes.
While real-money transactions are no longer available, players can continue using Gleamium and character tokens to access in-game content until support ends on May 30. At that time, MultiVersus will be delisted from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store.
The announcement, coupled with the lack of a refund policy, sparked backlash from players, especially those who purchased the $100 premium Founder's Pack, feeling "scammed." Many have expressed frustration over character tokens becoming useless after unlocking all available characters. Consequently, the game has been subject to review bombing on Steam.
In response, Tony Huynh, co-founder of Player First Games and game director of MultiVersus, issued a statement via Twitter, thanking the teams at Warner Bros. Games and Player First Games, as well as the IP holders for their trust. He expressed gratitude to the players for their support and apologized for not addressing the situation sooner, emphasizing the team's focus on the game and the well-being of its developers.
Huynh highlighted the community's contributions, such as fan art and character ideas, and explained the complexities involved in character selection, using BananaGuard as an example of team enthusiasm driving content creation. He clarified his role within the highly collaborative environment at Player First Games, emphasizing the team's commitment to delivering value to players.
Addressing the threats of harm, Huynh stated that such actions crossed a line, emphasizing the emotional toll the shutdown has taken on the team. He encouraged players to enjoy Season 5 and continue supporting other platform fighter and fighting games, sharing his personal connection to the genre and the positive impact it has had on his life.
Angelo Rodriguez Jr., Player First Games' community manager and game developer, also took to X/Twitter to defend Huynh, condemning the threats against him and underscoring Huynh's dedication and involvement with the community. Rodriguez Jr. highlighted the team's efforts to improve the game and urged players to appreciate the hard work put into Season 5.
The closure of MultiVersus adds to Warner Bros. Games' recent challenges, following the poor reception of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and the departure of Warner Bros. Games boss David Haddad. According to Warner Bros. Discovery, the failures of these games resulted in significant financial losses. In response, Warner Bros. is focusing on core franchises like Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, and DC, particularly Batman, to improve its success rate in the gaming industry.
