The beloved Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is poised to unveil its first major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham hinting that an announcement could come "any day." During an insightful interview with Business Insider, the team shared their ambitious plans for the future. While the name of the video game and its exact connection to the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, Willingham confirmed that the development team is diligently working on the project.
Willingham elaborated on the interactive nature of the upcoming game, stating, "They'll actually be getting their hand on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria." This suggests that players will have a significant impact on the narrative, exploring both familiar and new elements within the Critical Role universe.

Travis Willingham, an actor and one of Critical Role's key figures, co-founded the company alongside fellow voice actors such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Matthew Mercer, and others. Since its launch, Critical Role has evolved into a vast universe of creative projects, including the popular Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.
The upcoming video game will complement Critical Role's existing projects without necessarily tying directly into them. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham mentioned that the team was in "active pursuit" of developing a video game spinoff, signaling the end of a multi-year journey. It remains uncertain whether the game will follow one of the group's campaigns or introduce an original story within the Critical Role world.
Originally, the team anticipated making an announcement by the end of 2024 or early 2025. Now, as we're well into 2025, the excitement builds as the announcement seems imminent. Reflecting on their approach, Willingham told Rolling Stone, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels. You know, there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."
While no release date for the Critical Role video game has been set, fans can stay engaged by exploring the first details on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
