11 bit studios has exciting news for fans of the Frostpunk series, announcing Frostpunk 1886, a highly anticipated remake of the original game, slated for release in 2027. This announcement comes just over six months after the launch of Frostpunk 2, showcasing the studio's commitment to expanding this beloved franchise. The first Frostpunk game debuted in 2018, meaning that by the time Frostpunk 1886 hits the market, nearly a decade will have passed since the initial release.

For those unfamiliar, Frostpunk is a gripping city-building survival video game set in an alternate history of the late 19th century. Players are tasked with constructing and managing a city amidst a global volcanic winter, juggling resource management, survival decisions, and expeditions to scavenge for survivors and essential supplies outside the city limits.

IGN's review of the original Frostpunk awarded it an impressive 9/10, praising its blend of thematic ideas and gameplay elements: "Frostpunk deftly mixes a variety of thematic ideas and gameplay elements into an engaging and unique, if occasionally unintuitive, strategy game." Meanwhile, Frostpunk 2 received an 8/10, with IGN noting: "Thanks to a ground-up rethinking of its ice-age city builder mechanics, Frostpunk 2's larger scale is less intimate but more socially and politically complex than the original."

11 bit studios has confirmed ongoing support for Frostpunk 2 with planned DLC and a console launch, even as they embark on the development of Frostpunk 1886. The studio's previous engine, the Liquid Engine, which powered both Frostpunk and This War of Mine, is no longer in use. The shift to Unreal Engine 5 for Frostpunk 1886 marks a significant technological upgrade, allowing the team to build upon the legacy of the first game.

"With the studio’s proprietary Liquid Engine, which powered not only the original Frostpunk but also This War of Mine, no longer in development, the team has long sought a new foundation to carry forward the legacy of the first game," 11 bit stated. The new project aims to return to the franchise’s roots, offering both newcomers and veteran players an evolved survival experience that retains the original's challenging moral dilemmas.

Frostpunk 1886 is named to honor a pivotal moment in the game's universe: the Great Storm that descended upon New London. This remake is far from a simple visual update; it promises new content, mechanics, laws, and an entirely new Purpose path, ensuring a fresh experience even for seasoned players.

The transition to Unreal Engine also opens up possibilities for mod support, a long-requested feature by the community, and the potential for future DLC content. "Reimagining Frostpunk in Unreal Engine also allows the game to become a living, expandable platform, bringing with it long-awaited mod support — a community request that was previously impossible to realize due to technical limitations of the original engine — as well as the possibility to add future DLC content," said 11 bit studios.

Fans can look forward to a future where both Frostpunk 2 and Frostpunk 1886 evolve in tandem, each offering unique visions of survival in the unforgiving cold. Alongside these projects, 11 bit studios is also working on The Alters, set to release in June.
