inZOI’s Karma System Allows for Literal Ghost Towns

inZOI’s karma system can transform vibrant cities into eerie ghost towns when too many Zois die with negative karma. Discover how this mechanic works and get details on the game’s upcoming early access release.

Ghosts Can Overwhelm inZOI Cities

Excess Ghosts Block New Zoi Births

An overabundance of ghosts in inZOI can halt city growth, disrupting its balance. In a recent PC Gamer Magazine feature, inZOI Director Hyungjun Kim explained the profound impact of the game’s karma system on gameplay.

Kim noted, "Every action a Zoi takes earns karma points." He further stated, "When a Zoi dies, their karma score decides their soul’s fate. A low score turns them into a ghost, requiring them to redeem karma before reincarnating."

If too many Zois die with poor karma, the city’s dynamics shift dramatically. Kim elaborated, "When ghosts dominate a city, no new Zois can be born, and families cannot form, making it critical for players to manage their Zois’ karma to prevent ghost town scenarios." This adds a layer of strategy, as players must maintain karma balance to sustain their cities.

Kim emphasized, "This system isn’t about forcing ‘good’ actions or banning ‘bad’ ones." He added, "Life isn’t just good or bad; every choice carries unique meaning. Players are encouraged to experiment with the karma system to craft varied stories and explore life’s complexities."

inZOI Director Honors The Sims’ Legacy

inZOI emerges as a strong contender in the life simulation genre, rivaling The Sims. However, Director Hyungjun Kim doesn’t see it as a direct competitor to the iconic franchise.

He explained, "We view inZOI as an alternative for life sim fans, not a rival to The Sims." Kim expressed admiration, stating, "We deeply respect The Sims’ legacy, built over years of capturing the intricate essence of life—a challenge no game can fully master quickly due to its complexity."

inZOI aims to stand out with distinct features. Kim highlighted, "Our goal is to let players shape their ideal lives through creative tools. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, inZOI offers realistic visuals, extensive customization, and AI-driven creativity. We want players to become their own storytellers, bringing their visions to life in immersive worlds."
