Insomniac Games Eyes More Game-to-Screen Adaptations Following CEO's Retirement
Insomniac Games, renowned for its Ratchet & Clank franchise, has expressed keen interest in further expanding its game-to-screen adaptations. This follows the recent retirement of founder and CEO Ted Price and was revealed in an interview with Variety.
Co-Studio Head Ryan Schneider highlighted the studio's experience with the 2016 Ratchet & Clank film, stating their ongoing enthusiasm for such projects, particularly regarding the beloved Ratchet & Clank universe. The 2016 film, while receiving mixed reviews, has paved the way for future endeavors, especially considering Insomniac's acquisition by Sony in 2019. Sony's demonstrated success with game adaptations, notably the critically acclaimed "The Last of Us," instills confidence in Insomniac's future plans.
Sony's Expanding Game Adaptation Portfolio
Insomniac's ambitions align perfectly with Sony's proven track record in transforming video games into successful films and television series. Recent successes include the 2022 "Uncharted" film and the 2023 "The Last of Us" series. Further solidifying their commitment, Sony announced additional projects at CES 2025:
- "The Last of Us" Season 2 (HBO, April 2025)
- "Until Dawn" live-action film (April 2025)
- "Ghost of Tsushima Legends" anime series (Crunchyroll, 2027)
- "Helldivers" feature film (release date TBA)
- "Horizon Zero Dawn" live-action film (release date TBA)
Insomniac's Leadership Transition
The interview coincided with the announcement of Ted Price's retirement after 30 years at the helm of Insomniac Games, the studio behind iconic franchises like "Spyro the Dragon," "Ratchet & Clank," and "Marvel's Spider-Man." Price cited his desire to step aside and allow a new generation of leadership to guide the company.
Three Insomniac veterans—Ryan Schneider, Chad Dezern, and Jen Huang—have assumed the roles of Co-Studio Heads. Price expressed his confidence in their ability to maintain Insomniac's legacy, emphasizing their deep understanding of the company's culture and processes.
