Sony recently canceled nine games and fans criticized the company for the string of failures

Sony finds itself navigating turbulent waters after its ambitious plan to launch 12 game services by 2025 fell through. The company's decision to abruptly cancel nine of these projects has sparked outrage among its player base.

In 2022, Jim Ryan, who was then serving as president of Sony Interactive Entertainment, unveiled the strategy to introduce these services, aiming to adapt to the evolving gaming industry. However, this approach met with resistance from gamers who feared Sony was shifting its focus away from the beloved single-player experiences. Despite assurances from Sony that it would not abandon single-player titles, the reality has proven otherwise.

Recent reports confirm that nine of the planned 12 projects have been scrapped. While the successful launch of Helldivers 2 brought in millions of players, other titles such as Concord and Payback were shut down. High-profile cancellations include The Last of Us: Factions, Spider-Man: The Great Web, and a game set in the God of War universe, developed by Bluepoint Games.

Here's Sony's list of canceled games:

  • Concord (didn't live up to expectations)
  • God of War by Bluepoint Games
  • Bend Studio's multiplayer game
  • The Last of Us: Factions
  • Spider-Man: The Great Web by Insomniac Games
  • Twisted Metal by Firesprite
  • Unannounced fantasy game from London Studio
  • Payback by Bungie
  • Networking project from Deviation Games

These cancellations represent a significant retreat from Sony's strategy to expand into the games-as-services sector. The gaming community has voiced its frustration, criticizing Sony for chasing trends at the expense of its established strengths. Projects from Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games, in particular, are now expected to be delayed by several years.
