Following a successful release, both Microsoft and Obsidian are pleased with Avowed's sales performance. In an insightful interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the potential for expanding the game's universe.

While no concrete plans have been announced, Patel expressed a keen interest in continuing her directorial journey within the franchise. She highlighted her desire for future expansions and a sequel, noting, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."

Changes in Avowed During Development

The development of Avowed was a journey filled with challenges and transformations. Patel shared that the process was initially chaotic but ultimately rewarding. The project, which began in 2018, saw Obsidian navigating the complexities of independence before being acquired by Microsoft and officially announced in 2020.

Significant changes included the removal of multiplayer features and several other functionalities. In January 2021, a leadership overhaul led to a reboot of the game under Patel's direction. Managing a team of over 80 people, Patel focused on enhancing the story and lore from the Pillars of Eternity franchise, shifting from an open world to more detailed open zones.

Reflecting on her experience, Patel remarked, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."

With Avowed reigniting interest in the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Obsidian is now exploring new avenues. During a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Josh Sawyer, director of Pillars of Eternity and its sequel, revealed the studio's interest in developing a tactics game, tentatively titled "Pillars: Tactics."

Sawyer explained, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games." However, he acknowledged the challenges in defining the project's scope, including team size, visual quality, and overall scale.

Despite this interest, Sawyer remains committed to the idea of creating Pillars of Eternity 3, envisioning a project with a budget comparable to that of Baldur’s Gate 3, set at $100 million.
