Palworld's Unexpected Path: From Massive Success to Indie Focus
Pocketpair, the developer behind the wildly successful Palworld, has amassed significant profits, potentially enough to fund a "beyond AAA" title. However, CEO Takuro Mizobe has revealed a different strategic direction for the studio.
Pocketpair Prioritizes Indie Development and Community Support
Palworld's revenue is in the "tens of billions of yen" (tens of millions of USD), yet Mizobe has stated that Pocketpair isn't structured to handle a project of that magnitude. While previous games, Craftopia and Overdungeon, funded Palworld's development, Mizobe believes scaling to a "beyond AAA" level would be premature and detrimental to the company's current structure.
In a GameSpark interview, Mizobe explained, "Scaling beyond AAA wouldn't be feasible given our current organizational maturity." He expressed a preference for "interesting indie games," aiming to maximize their potential within a smaller, more agile framework. Mizobe cited the challenges of AAA development and the flourishing indie scene, with improved engines and market conditions enabling global success without massive teams. He emphasized Pocketpair's gratitude to the indie community and their desire to contribute back.
Palworld's Expansion into New Avenues
Mizobe previously stated that Pocketpair wouldn't be expanding its team or upgrading offices, instead focusing on diversifying the Palworld IP through various mediums. Palworld, currently in early access, has received positive feedback for its gameplay and consistent updates, including a PvP arena and the Sakurajima island. Furthermore, a partnership with Sony has led to the creation of Palworld Entertainment, handling global licensing and merchandising.
