PocketPair May Thrive with Palworld's Live Service Approach

PocketPair CEO Takuro Mizobe recently spoke with ASCII Japan about Palworld's future, specifically addressing the possibility of transitioning the popular creature-catching shooter into a live service game. The interview revealed a careful consideration of various options and the challenges involved.

A Profitable, Yet Difficult Path

Mizobe confirmed that while future updates are planned (including a new map, Pals, and raid bosses), the long-term direction for Palworld remains undecided. He outlined two primary paths: completing Palworld as a traditional buy-to-play (B2P) title or transforming it into a live service game (LiveOps). The B2P model offers a one-time purchase for full game access, while live service games typically utilize ongoing monetization through content releases.

Mizobe acknowledged the financial advantages of a live service model, stating that it would offer greater profit potential and extend the game's lifespan. However, he emphasized the significant challenges, noting that Palworld's initial design wasn't built for this model.

A crucial factor, Mizobe stressed, is player preference. The successful transition of games like PUBG and Fall Guys to free-to-play (F2P) with subsequent monetized content took years. He highlighted the difficulty of converting a B2P game into a live service model and the potential negative reaction from a player base accustomed to a one-time purchase.

The interview also touched upon alternative monetization strategies, such as ad revenue. Mizobe dismissed this option for the PC version, citing the generally negative player reaction to ads in PC games, particularly on platforms like Steam.

Currently, PocketPair is focused on attracting new players and retaining its existing community while carefully weighing the best path forward for Palworld. The game remains in early access, recently releasing a major update, Sakurajima, and introducing a highly anticipated PvP arena. The ultimate direction for Palworld remains under careful consideration.
