Xbox: Spencer to Spotlight Competitors in Showcases

By BellaFeb 20,2025

Microsoft's recent shift in showcasing multiplatform games during its Xbox events marks a significant change in strategy. Previously, announcements of games launching on rival consoles like the PlayStation 5 were often made separately or after the Xbox showcase concluded. This was evident in the June 2024 showcase, where titles like Doom: The Dark Ages and Dragon Age: The Veilguard initially omitted PS5 mentions.

PS5 logos were absent from Microsoft's June 2024 showcase.

However, the January 2025 Xbox Developer Direct showcased a different approach. Games like Ninja Gaiden 4, Doom: The Dark Ages, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 prominently displayed the PS5 logo alongside Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Game Pass. This transparency continues a trend of including PS5 logos in subsequent trailers.

PS5 logos were included in Microsoft's January 2025 showcase.

This contrasts sharply with Sony and Nintendo, who maintain a focus on their respective consoles in their showcases. Recent State of Play events, for example, omitted any mention of Xbox, even for multiplatform titles.

Xbox head Phil Spencer clarified this change in strategy in an interview with XboxEra. He emphasized a commitment to transparency, stating that the goal is to inform players of all platforms where their games will be available. While acknowledging limitations on "closed platforms," he prioritized making games accessible across as many screens as possible.

Spencer's vision is to prioritize the games themselves, enabling broader player access. This approach, while differing from competitors, reflects a belief that game reach is paramount. Consequently, future Xbox showcases are expected to continue including PS5 and potentially Nintendo Switch 2 logos alongside Xbox branding. The upcoming June 2025 showcase could feature titles like Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, and Perfect Dark with PS5 logos.

However, it's unlikely Sony and Nintendo will reciprocate this level of cross-platform promotion in their own events.
