Joanna Novak, the historical consultant for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, offered valuable perspectives on her contributions to both games, addressing the inherent challenges and compromises in creating a historically-inspired yet engaging narrative.
Novak emphasized the significant divergence between the game's storyline—following the journey of protagonist Henry—and the actual lived experiences of a 15th-century blacksmith's son. The narrative, she explained, prioritizes elements of legend and folklore over strict historical accuracy. She assigned the plot a "1 out of 10" realism rating, acknowledging the deliberate creative choices made by the developers. The appeal of a "rags-to-riches" narrative, featuring heroic ascents, interactions with historical figures, and ultimate triumph, clearly outweighs the less dramatic reality of peasant life for most players.
In crafting the game world and environment for Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Warhorse Studios strived for authenticity. However, limitations in time, budget, and gameplay mechanics necessitated compromises. Certain adjustments were implemented to meet modern player expectations, ensuring historical accuracy didn't overshadow the overall gaming experience.
Despite these compromises, Novak expressed satisfaction with the incorporation of numerous period-accurate details. She underscored, however, that labeling the game as strictly realistic or historically accurate would be an inaccurate representation.
