Kojima Eyes Film Directing After Finishing PlayStation Game Physint in 5-6 Years

Hideo Kojima's eagerly awaited project, Physint, the spiritual successor to the iconic Metal Gear series, is still a considerable distance from completion. In a recent interview with Le Film Francais, Kojima shared that fans will have to wait another "five or six years" before they can get their hands on this new "action espionage" game. This timeline is set after he completes his current projects, notably since his high-profile departure from Konami in 2015.

Kojima's departure from Konami sparked a flurry of offers for him to develop games at his independent studio, but his focus remains steadfast on his upcoming titles. In addition to Physint, Kojima is also working on Death Stranding 2 and OD, the latter being a new IP developed in partnership with Xbox Game Studios, featuring actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele.

The announcement of Physint came from PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst back in January 2024. Initially, Kojima hinted that Physint might also venture into the realm of cinema, though he later clarified on X/Twitter that while the game's elements like its look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, and sound are at a cinematic level, it remains a game at its core.

Kojima's passion for cinema remains strong, and he aspires to direct a movie once his current game projects are completed. "I grew up with cinema. Directing would be, in a way, a tribute to it. Also, I'm getting older, and I'd prefer to do it while I'm still young!" he remarked, highlighting his urgency to transition to filmmaking.

In the meantime, fans can look forward to Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, set for release on June 26. The franchise's star, Norman Reedus, has teased his involvement in the upcoming film adaptation of the original Death Stranding, stating in an interview with IGN that he would naturally play himself in the movie.

Kojima's creativity extends beyond these projects. Recently, he shared insights into discarded video game concepts, including an intriguing idea for a 'Forgetting Game' where the protagonist loses memories and abilities if the player takes extended breaks. Additionally, Kojima revealed he has left a USB stick filled with game ideas for his staff to explore after his passing, ensuring his legacy in gaming continues.

As Kojima navigates these ambitious projects, his dedication to pushing the boundaries of digital entertainment remains clear, promising fans a blend of innovative gameplay and cinematic storytelling in the years to come.
