Witcher 4 Devs Shared Some Insights About the Game’s Development
Addressed Controversy About Ciri’s Lead Role

In a recent interview with VGC on December 18, The Witcher 4's narrative director, Phillipp Weber, tackled the controversy surrounding the decision to make Ciri the protagonist. Traditionally, fans have expected Geralt to lead the series, and Weber acknowledges this expectation. "I think we definitely knew it could be controversial for some people because of course, in the previous three Witcher games, Geralt was the protagonist and I think everyone really loved playing as Geralt," he explained.
Despite the attachment to Geralt, which Weber shares, he believes that choosing Ciri is the right move for the series. "The best thing that we can do, and I think this is really our goal, is to prove that with Ciri, we can do a lot of interesting things so we can really make it worth it because this decision to have Ciri as a protagonist wasn’t made yesterday, we started making this a very long time ago," he stated.

Weber further justified this choice by noting that Ciri was already positioned as a secondary protagonist in the novels and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. He described the decision as a "natural evolution" of their long-term vision for the series, allowing them to delve deeper into the Witcher universe and Ciri's character post-The Witcher 3.
In the same interview, executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga reassured fans that the game will clarify the fates of Geralt and other characters after the events of The Witcher 3. "Everyone has the right to have an opinion, and we do believe it comes from the passion for our games and I think the best answer for that will be the game itself when the game is released," she said.

While Ciri takes the lead, fans of Geralt need not worry; his voice actor confirmed in August 2024 that Geralt will still feature in the game, albeit in a smaller capacity. This opens the door for both new and returning characters in The Witcher 4. For more details on this development, be sure to check out our comprehensive article.

Witcher 4 Technical Specifications Remain Unclear

In another interview with Eurogamer on December 18, Phillipp Weber and The Witcher 4's director, Sebastian Kalemba, discussed the game's compatibility with current-gen consoles. However, they remained vague about specific details.
Kalemba confirmed their collaboration with Epic's engineers on a new engine built on Unreal Engine 5. "Yes, we are working on a new engine right now, together with Epic's engineers, and there is a great synergy and a great collaboration between us. And currently we're working on Unreal Engine 5 and our custom build. And obviously, we want to support all the platforms - meaning PC, Xbox, and Sony, right? - but I cannot, right now, tell you more specifics regarding that," he stated.
Kalemba also mentioned that the reveal trailer serves as a "good benchmark" for their aspirations, though it does not represent the final graphics of the game. This suggests that the visuals shown at the recent Game Awards might be indicative of what players can expect.
Witcher 4 Devs New Approach

In a Eurogamer interview from November 29, CDPR's vice president of technology, Charles Tremblay, revealed a strategic shift in the development of The Witcher 4. This change aims to prevent a repeat of the issues faced during Cyberpunk 2077's launch.
Tremblay explained that they are now developing games on hardware with the "lowest" specifications, such as consoles, to ensure smooth performance across various platforms. This approach suggests a simultaneous launch on PC and consoles, though the specific consoles remain undisclosed.
Despite the ambiguity around platform support, the developers have committed to making The Witcher 4 accessible on both low-spec consoles and high-end PCs, ensuring a wide reach for the game.
