Warframe's Developer, Digital Extremes, Unveils Exciting New Content and a Vision for Live Service Games
Digital Extremes, creators of the popular free-to-play looter shooter Warframe, recently showcased exciting updates at TennoCon 2024, including a gameplay demo for Warframe: 1999 and a devstream for their upcoming fantasy MMO, Soulframe. The presentations offered insights into gameplay mechanics and the studio's philosophy on long-term live service game development.

Warframe: 1999 – A Retro Sci-Fi Adventure (Winter 2024 Release)
Warframe: 1999 transports players to a retro-futuristic Höllvania, battling proto-infested enemies as Arthur Nightingale, leader of the Hex team, piloting a Protoframe. The gameplay demo, available on the Warframe YouTube channel, features intense action sequences, including a memorable encounter with a '90s boy band (yes, really!).

The expansion introduces a unique romance system using "Kinematic Instant Message," allowing players to build relationships with Hex members. Furthermore, Digital Extremes is collaborating with The Line animation studio on a short film set within the Warframe: 1999 universe, launching alongside the expansion.

Soulframe – A Deliberate Fantasy MMO (Fall 2024 Alpha)
The Soulframe devstream revealed a more methodical melee combat system compared to Warframe. Players take on the role of an Envoy, fighting the Ode curse in the land of Alca. The Warsong Prologue introduces the game's world and story. Players will utilize a personal Nightfold Orbiter and collect Ancestors, powerful spirits offering unique gameplay benefits.

Enemies include the formidable Nimrod and the ominous Bromius. Currently in a closed alpha phase (Soulframe Preludes), Soulframe is slated for a wider release this fall.

Digital Extremes CEO on the Longevity of Live Service Games
Digital Extremes CEO Steve Sinclair voiced concerns about the premature cancellation of live service games by major publishers due to initial performance anxieties. He highlighted Warframe's long-term success as a counterpoint, emphasizing the importance of sustained investment and community building in the live service model.

Sinclair's comments underscore Digital Extremes' commitment to long-term support for their titles, a strategy evident in their continued development of Warframe and the ambitious plans for Soulframe.
