This Western Tamang-Nepali dictionary serves as a vital resource for preserving and promoting the Western Tamang language, a dialect spoken primarily in the western regions of Nepal, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Lamjung, Chitawan, and Kanchanpur. Tamang, a Tibeto-Burman language with a significant speaker population in Nepal (ranking fifth with 5.1% of the population according to the 2011 census), faces the ongoing challenge of language shift towards Nepali.
This collaborative project, undertaken by members of the Western Tamang community, provides Nepali translations for Western Tamang words, facilitating comparative linguistic study and aiding those unfamiliar with the language. The dictionary addresses the concerning decline in Western Tamang speakers, offering a crucial tool for language revitalization. The distinct Western Tamang dialect, differentiating itself from Eastern Tamang (spoken east of the Trisuli River), reflects a rich cultural heritage, with origins traced back to Tibet, as suggested by oral traditions. Cultural practices, such as the directional placement of the deceased during funeral rites, further illustrate the unique aspects of Western Tamang culture.
The dictionary's creators welcome feedback and contributions to ensure ongoing improvement and expansion. The latest version (1.7, updated September 29, 2024) includes a new Android SDK, reflecting a commitment to accessibility and continued development.
