Today marks the 10th anniversary of Bloodborne, and fans are celebrating with another "Return to Yharnam" community event. FromSoftware's PlayStation 4 masterpiece, which launched on March 24, 2015, solidified the Japanese developer's status as one of the greatest in the industry. The game received widespread critical and commercial success, yet a follow-up akin to the Dark Souls sequels has been conspicuously absent. The question on everyone's mind remains: Why hasn't Sony pursued a current-gen remaster, a sequel, or at least a next-gen update that would enable 60fps gameplay? Despite fans' continuous pleas for more Bloodborne content, Sony's silence on the matter is one of the most perplexing business decisions in the gaming world.
Earlier this year, former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida offered some insight into the situation. In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Yoshida, who stressed that his comments were merely personal opinions and not reflective of internal Sony discussions, suggested that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the president of FromSoftware, might be the reason behind the lack of updates. Yoshida theorized that Miyazaki, who deeply cherishes Bloodborne, may be too busy with other projects to work on a sequel or remaster himself and is unwilling to let others handle it. The PlayStation team, according to Yoshida, respects Miyazaki's stance.
Miyazaki's success is undeniable, with his work on the influential Dark Souls series and the recent blockbuster Elden Ring, which is now set to have a multiplayer spin-off. Following Bloodborne, Miyazaki directed Dark Souls 3, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice for Activision, and Elden Ring for Bandai Namco. Although Miyazaki often avoids discussing Bloodborne, pointing out that FromSoftware does not own the IP, he did concede last year that the game could benefit from a release on more modern hardware.
In the absence of official updates, modders have stepped in to enhance the Bloodborne experience. However, Sony has cracked down on these efforts, as evidenced by the takedown notices issued to mod creators like Lance McDonald and Lilith Walther, whose projects included a 60fps patch and a Bloodborne-themed racing game. Meanwhile, technological advancements in PS4 emulation have allowed fans to experience Bloodborne at 60fps on PC, as demonstrated by Digital Foundry's coverage of ShadPS4's breakthrough. This development may have prompted a more aggressive stance from Sony, though the company has not responded to inquiries on the matter.

As the community continues to celebrate Bloodborne's milestone, today's "Return to Yharnam" event invites players to start fresh characters, engage with as many co-op partners and invaders as possible, and leave in-game messages to highlight their participation. Without official developments, it appears that fan-driven initiatives like these may be the only way forward for Bloodborne enthusiasts.
