Monster Hunter Wilds is set to redefine the visual appeal of in-game food, aiming to captivate players with dishes that look irresistibly delicious. The development team, led by executive director/art director Kaname Fujioka and director Yuya Tokuda, is focusing on enhancing the realism and allure of the game's culinary offerings. Since the first Monster Hunter game in 2004, cooking has been an integral part of the series, evolving from basic meals to a diverse array of dishes that significantly impact gameplay. With Monster Hunter World in 2018, the focus on food intensified, and Monster Hunter Wilds aims to take this even further.
Scheduled for release on February 28, 2025, Monster Hunter Wilds will feature a broad spectrum of meat, fish, and vegetable dishes. Fujioka emphasized the importance of not just realistic but also appetizing visuals, stating in an IGN interview, "Making it look realistic isn't enough to make it look good. You really have to think about what makes something look delicious." The team draws inspiration from anime and commercials, using exaggerated realism and special lighting effects to enhance the appeal of the food.
Monster Hunter Wilds Embraces a Camping Grill Atmosphere
In a departure from previous titles, Monster Hunter Wilds allows players to dine anywhere, fostering a camping grill atmosphere rather than a formal restaurant setting. This approach was highlighted in a December preview where a cheese pull from a dish captivated fans. Even simple meals like roasted cabbage are given special attention, with Fujioka describing the challenge of making it appealing by showing it puff up realistically as the lid is removed from the pan, topped with a roasted egg.
On the meatier side of the menu, Tokuda hinted at a secret "extravagant" meat dish, adding an element of mystery and excitement. The game aims to showcase a variety of dishes and the joyful expressions of characters dining around a campfire, enhancing the sense of food-related bliss through its cooking cutscenes.
