In a recent interview, Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, former lead quest designer for The Witcher 3, discussed CD Projekt Red's initial concerns about balancing a sprawling narrative with an open-world design.

Tomaszkiewicz noted the unprecedented challenge of adapting the intricate storytelling of linear RPGs (like The Witcher 2) to a vast open world. He stated, "Few games have attempted what we did: merging expansive storytelling, typically found in linear RPGs, with an open-world experience."
CD Projekt Red initially feared that the game's ambitious narrative would conflict with the open-world structure. However, they persevered, resulting in the critically acclaimed The Witcher 3.
Now leading Rebel Wolves, Tomaszkiewicz is developing The Blood of Dawnwalker, a dark fantasy vampire RPG set in an alternate medieval Eastern Europe. Currently in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, a gameplay reveal is anticipated this summer, though a release date remains unannounced.
