Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System
FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not include an in-game messaging system, a staple feature of previous Soulsborne titles. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki, is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, anticipated to feature shorter play sessions of around 40 minutes, leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the asynchronous messaging system.
While the messaging system, renowned for fostering community interaction and providing both helpful and humorous player contributions, is absent, other asynchronous features will remain and be enhanced. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will return, offering players even more information about their fellow players' deaths and even allowing for looting of fallen players' ghosts.
FromSoftware's vision for Nightreign is a "compressed RPG," prioritizing intensity and a streamlined multiplayer experience. This focus on a more concise and consistently engaging gameplay loop, structured around three-day cycles, directly influenced the decision to remove the messaging system. The goal is to minimize downtime and maximize variety within the game's structure.
Nightreign's 2025 release window was confirmed during its TGA 2024 reveal, though a more specific date is yet to be announced by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco.
